B. Khamidullin. Girays on the Kazan throne: the national resurgence period

The article reviews the reign of the Crimean Tatar Girays in the Kazan Khanate, namely, Sahib Giray, Safa Giray and Utamesh Giray. The distinguished studier of the early ХХth century M. G. Khudyakov called the Girays’ regnal years in Kazan «the resurgence period» in the ethnopolitical history of Kazan Tatars during the Kazan khanate period.

D. Mustafina. «And only that wasteland is given to them as a chief-rent without any right of repurchase…» (On particularities of the ancestral lands formation in the Holy Dormition Monastery of Sviyazhsk)

The article reviews the establishment and functioning of the Holy Dormition Monastery of Sviyazhsk during the latter half of the XVI and the first half of the XVII centuries as a major feudal and economic entity. The recondite and never-before-published act notes reflecting the multiplying peculiarities for the monastery’s land estate are attached to the article.

I. Toropitsin. The Astrakhan Yurt Tatars during Razin revolt

The article is dedicated to the study of the political and social life of the Astrakhan Yurt Tatars during the Razin revolt of 1670-1671. The main focus is on the analysis of the Astrakhan Yurt Tatars’ response to the events preceding the seizure of Astrakhan by Razinists, social and political conflicts among local Turkic population during the revolt, the attitude of the Yurt Tatars towards various Astrakhan social groups, interrelations of Razinists and the Turkic population of the Lower Volga region, participation of the Astrakhan Yurt Tatars in the revolt suppression by the tsar troops.

R. Iskhakov, H. Bagautdinova. «We must aim at not opening numerous schools, but establishing thorough ones» (Elementary schools arrangement project for the settlements of Muslim Tatars and pagans in 1844)

The article presents the documents related with the project of arrangement of elementary schools for volost management servants training in the settlements of Muslim Tatars and pagans in 1844 in the Middle Volga region. These materials allow analyzing the activity of Ministry of State Property in terms of the state elementary education development in the Muslim Tatars settlements in the 1840s.

S. Shendrikova. Tours of theatre workers in the Russian Empire during XIX — early XX centuries in the South Crimea

The work deals with the theatre life in the South Coast of the Crimea in the late ХIХ and early ХХ centuries. The outstanding theatre personalities toured there, such as stage managers, playwriters, actors, among them the Russian opera artist F. Shalyapin, Russian realistic theatre founder M. Shchepkin, People’s artist of Russia G. Fedotova and others. Much attention is paid to the actors’ charity work during the meet-the-artist tours along the peninsula.

S. Yezhova. Vocational education of women in Kazan in the late XIX and the early ХХ centuries (As exemplified by Private girls’ high school of L. P. Shumkova)

The article analyzes the main development trends of private girls’ high school of L. P. Shumkova in Kazan. The charity work of high school’s trustee merchant P. I. Alexandrov is reviewed. In reliance on the archival records and published sources his role in establishment and development of vocational education of women in the late XIX and the early ХХ centuries in Kazan is revealed.

E. Mironova. Travelling as leisure activity of the Kazan noblemen (last quarter of XIX and the early ХХ cc.)

The article is dedicated to the travelling of the noblemen of the Kazan government in the last quarter of XIX and the early ХХ centuries. On the ground of the memoirs the main travel purposes, travel routes, periods of stay and household routine are studied.

G. Valeeva-Suleymanova. Modernization process in the Tatar art in the early ХХ century

The turn of the ХIХ-ХХ centuries was a watershed moment for the Tatar culture which had transformed from a traditional muslim into a secular one. The modernization processes took place under the influence of the Jadids who promoted a fundamental change in the Tatar society and Islamic consciousness. The article reveals the specific character of the cultural reformation stage, formation of European type of art and individual bibliographies of the first Tatar artists are provided.

L. Mukhamadeeva. Kryashens’ print media in the first half of the XX century

The idea of print media establishment for Kryashens was first defined during the revolutionary events of 1905-1907. The article provides the analysis of the Kryashen newspapers and magazines in the first half of the XX century. The printed press published various articles and materials objectively reflecting the events taking place within the Kryashen population.

A. Borisov. The unimplemented concept of the Bulak reconstruction within «Big Kazan» plan in the first half of the 1930s.

The state of the Bulak channel, which is a main element of the historical part of Kazan, was the reason for anxiety for most generations of the city executives. However, various external factors (wars and revolutions) interfered with the large-scale reconstruction works. In the latter half of the 1930s the practical needs of the city enterprises and increasing demands of the city-folk made the city authorities turn to the solution of the issue which stipulated the reconstruction of the Bulak adjacencies according to the grand project of «Big Kazan».

А. Kabirova. «The committee accepts the “Kazanskiy Perimeter” border construction works with “good” grade» (Construction of the Volga defensive line within the territory of the TASSR)

The article is dedicated to the erection of the Volga defensive line within the territory of the Tatar ASSR in 1941. The reasons for its erection and the construction stages are revealed; manufacture issues’ solution is reviewed and the authority structures performance on mobilization works arrangement is evaluated.

Е. Dolgov. «In dominion and war troubles»: Kazan governors of the Petrine and after-Petrine period

The article narrates the Governorate Institute which appeared in Russia under Peter the Great. Using the example of Kazan Government, functioning problems of this state power institute are revealed. The readers’ attention is called to the brief description of senior government officials of Kazan government holding the position of the Governor from 1708 till 1764. In the first half of the XVIII century they possessed special powers in the region consolidating in their own hands managerial, policing, financial, judicial and military functions. In whole, the Kazan region executives were congruent with the All-Russian Governor Corps and did not possess any peculiar features.

N. Almazova, D. Grebenkina. The failed reform of the Kazan University archives (the late XIX and early XX centuries)

The article is dedicated to the failed attempt of the Kazan University archive’s rearrangement on the cusp of XIX and ХХ centuries. On the one hand, the published documents allow imagining the structure of the Kazan university archives in 1899, and on the other hand — to explain why the motives for its structure change could be weaker that the ones for its preservation unchanged.

G. Rafikova, F. Ibragimova. The Kazan University biographics: the Anderson

The biographies of pre-revolutionary professors and teaching staff of the Kazan University are well-studied but still some forgotten names are available. Among them there is Anderson professors dynasty. They are Nikolay Karl Adolf Anderson (1845-1905), Finnish dialects teacher, and Walter Arthur Alexander Anderson (1885-1962), the West European literature specialist. On the basis of wide-range sources from Kazan, Saint-Petersburg and Minsk archives the authors reconstructed their biographies providing them with the inedited photographs from the Anderson family archive.

D. Usmanova. Mikhail Yakovlevich Kapustin: a parliamentarian professor

The article is dedicated to the professor of the Kazan University, State Duma Deputy of the 1st and 2nd convocations M. Ya. Kapustin (1847-1920). The main focus is on the politico-social views and Duma activity of the Kazan professor. The humanistic attitude of M. Ya. Kapustin towards the actual social problems was in the good graces of his contemporaries, but the character and results of his parliamentary activities triggered ambiguous, and sometimes quite critical judgements. The publication based on the archive documents, print media materials and Duma debates scribe’ reports provide means for creating of a holistic image of the Kazan Deputy who proved himself both in scientific and political fields.

А. Fedotova. Struggling for public charity right: Aid of N. P. Kupriyanova to the ones affected by the bad crop in 1906-1907 in Kazan government

The article is dedicated to the charity work of a Kazan noblewoman N. P. Kupriyanova (1868-1950) during the failyears of 1906-1907. The documents from the National Archives of the Republic of Tatarstan enable identifying the managerial and legal aspects of her activities, as well as the obstacles she faced.

А. Мukhamadeev. Where was the border and were there any Christians and Hebrews among Volga Bulgars?

The article reviews the possibility of presence of Christians and Hebrews among Volga Bulgars. The kindred hun, bolgar and khazar tribes and folks, as well as other Turkic nations of antiquity and the early Middle Ages distinguished themselves by a religious tolerance. Volga Bulgars, among which Islam and paganism coexisted peacefully, were not an exception in this respect. Besides, there are serious reasons to suppose that there was a considerable number of Christians and Hebrews in Volga Bulgaria, especially in the initial period of its development.

Ya. Pilipchuk. On the Slavs and Burtas in the Middle Volga: reality and delusions

The study covers an issue of clarification of the Slavs and Iranian-speaking population’s presence in the Middle Volga region. The author analyses Arabian and Perian sources and reviews the historiography issue of Burtas ethnic background. The term «saqaliba» in the Muslim sources meant different in terms of ethnics population of Eastern Europe. Arabian geographers did not have any other term for denoting Finns and Balts. Saqaliba is Finns, Balts and Eastern Europe Slavs. Burtas are the Iranian-speaking population of the Volga region.

L. Gabdrafikova. «The life was passing by quietly and slowly, and time was measured not by calendar dates…» (New plaques on the history of Menzelinsk district town)

The article reviews the social and economical development of Menzelinsk in the latter half of the XIX and the early XX centuries. The specific nature of social and cultural environment of the town was the educational institutions, some graduates of which made real progress in scientific and pedagogical field. The publication contains an extract from the reminiscences of the town native and Candidate of Philosophical Science, the first principal of the Omsk State Pedagogical Institute A. S. Slivko (1884-1972).

Ya. Rudneva. First kazan women’s Higher courses (1876-1887): for the 140-anniversary of foundation

The article reviews the peculiar features of the archive paperwork management in Women’ higher courses founded in the Russian Empire in the 1870s and its difference from the university paperwork management formed by the mid XIX century. The author supposes that mostly the occasional character of archival fund formation in first Kazan women’s higher courses creates a number of specific problems requiring more careful and critical analysis of the documents from the contemporary history researchers.

М. Arslanov. «Tukay» tragedy А. Fayzi: the first staging and the run (for the 130-year anniversary of G. Tukay’s birthday)

The watershed staging both of the Tatar directing in 1930s and director Sh. Sarimsakov is the performance according to «Tukay» play by A. Fayzi on stage of G. Kamal Tatar State Academy Theatre. It was premiered on September 18, 1939. Based on the richest historical material on the life and oeuvre of the poet, truly showing the way of life and morals of the time, environment and people surrounding him, the play was performed precisely and stylistically kept.

L. Huzeeva. On Rafael Mustafin’s personal fund in the Central State Archive of historical and political documentation of the Republic of Tatarstan (for the 85th anniversary of birthday)

The personal fund of a writer, publicist, literary critic R. A. Mustafin (1931-2011), passed to the Central State Archive of historic-political documentation of the Republic of Tatarstan, is of the utmost interest in terms of his oeuvre study. The readers are provided with the documents and photographs from the fund.

B. Khismatullin, H. Bagautdinova. The history of the Kazan khanate villages in S. Vakhidi manuscript fund

The article reviews the history of some Kazan khanate settlements on the basis of a historical story. The document was found in the manuscript fund of historian S. Vakhidi in the archive of the RT AS G. Ibragimov Institute of language, literature and art. As the analysis shows, most of the facts contained in the document are proved with the other sources’ data.

I. Rameeva. Parvus: Turkish journalism

The article narrates the Turkish period of life and work of a famous social democrat and publicist Alexander Lvovich Gelfand (Parvus) (1867-1924). During his habitation in Turkey (1910-1915) his works were published in most of newspapers and magazines, including one of the most top-ranked printed press of that time «Turk Yurdu» magazine. Readers are provided with the list of Parvus articles in «Turk Yurdu» columns.

I. Khanipova. Tatar ASSR during the transformation period: 1945-1985

The article analyzes the monograph of Doctor of Historical Sciences, leading researcher of the RT AS Sh. Mardzhani Institute of History A. G. Gallyamova «Tatar ASSR during the Post-Stalinism period (1945-1985)» (Kazan, 2015), dedicated to the economical, ideological and sociocultural transformations of Stalinism and Post-Stalinism periods. The research is based on the materials of Tatar ASSR in the latter half of the ХХ century.

R. Bekkin. Kronshtadt Muslim community in the XIX and the early XX centuries

According to the data from 1850 the number of military Muslims in Kronshtadt exceeded 800 people. The Tatar community needed a special area for Friday and feast’s prayers. The article reviews the development of a naval mosque construction project in Kronshtadt and the history of a Muslim tabernacle in the city in the latter half of the XIX century. The mosque erection issue was a political one and was being solved by the Emperor himself.

I. Aliyev. A monument to Alexander II in Kazan

Many provincial cities of Russia decided to place monument to Alexander II after death of the emperor in 1881. Opening ceremony of a monument to Alexander II took place in Kazan on August 30, 1895. The article tells about the ceremony, and also about the history of the monument creation.

E. Vagabova. Schools of the Council of the Congress of the Baku petroleum producers (the end of XIX — the beginning of the XX century)

The author tells about opening of schools of Council of Congress of the Baku petroleum producers in the oil-field areas of Baku city. There were national classes at schools where teaching was in the native language that considerably promoted distribution of literacy among children. The author deals with the questions of control over activity of schools, catering services, provides data on number of schools and pupils.

L. Chubukchiyeva. Participation of women in the celebration of the Terdzhiman newspaper anniversaries

Celebrations of the Terdzhiman newspaper anniversaries (10, 20 and the 25 anniversaries), and also participation of Muslim female in them are described in article. The author shows the stages of integration of the woman into sociocultural life of Muslim society in the end of XIX — the beginning of the XX century on the example of the festive actions analysis.

A. Yeldashev. Two photographs from a family photobook (self-sacrifying life of Grand Duchess Elisaveta Feodorovna)

The article is dedicated to the charity work of Grand Duchess Elisaveta Feodorovna. In the summer of 1905 she arranged a hospital for the disabled soldiers of Russo-Japanese war on the landed property of her husband Grand Duke Sergey Aleksandrovich in Ilyinskoye vollage. Among her patients there was a native of Novospasskoye village of Menzelinskiy county of Ufa government (currently Zainskiy region of the Republic of Tatarstan) М. М. Volkov. The vivid stringency of the research is provided with two photographs presented by Grand Duchess and remained in the family of M. M. Volkov’s granddaughter.

E. Burdin. Volostnikovka village: history pages of the underflooding area in Kuybyshev hydroelectric power plant

The article reviews the historical and cultural heritage of an old Volga region village of Volostnikovka from 1861 to 1920, which formed a part of Spasskiy county of Kazan government. The main focus is on the archeological monuments in the settlement’s neighborhood, the history of an orthodox temple, as well as the migration process before Kuybyshev reservoir creation. The author managed to find out the unique facts from the village’s history.

B. Militsyn. The Kazan Jewish community history

The Jewish religious community appeared in the 1830th in Kazan. The Jewish population consisted mainly of handicraftsmen and descendants of military kantonists. The number of Jewish soldiers, the former kantonist, exceeded 300 people in 1865 in Kazan. They also established the Jewish community formation in the city.

A. Tagirdzhanova. From experience of studying of a problem of Musa Bigeev surname misspell

It is a common practice in recent history to misspell the last name of a Tatar philosopher-theologist Musa Jarullah Bigeev. The spelling «Bigiev» appeared before the revolution because of the negligence of some authors and became more frequent in the early-Soviet period. Archive documents and the identity certificates of Bigeev’s descendants prove that this spelling is incorrect. The remaining autographs confirm that Musa Jarullah wrote his own last name exclusively as «Bigeev».

L. Usmanova. «Japan and Tatar world» project: academical and cultural cooperation

The article is provided with the history of its start, implementation and the first results of the academical project of the scientific cooperation carried out at the premises of Sh. Mardzhani Institute of History of the RT AS between the scientists of Japan and Tatarstan. Such a large-scale project, roughly called «Japan and Tatar world» is implemented for the first time in humanities field and is unique for Russia as a whole.
